"Terriers," the character-driven private-eye drama shot in and around Ocean Beach has not been renewed for a second season due to low ratings. Apparently, the ratings were even too low for FX, which tends to renew shows they believe in despite low ratings in the hopes that viewership will build.
"Terriers" had very good reviews and a growing cult following, but it wasn't enough. Last ditch efforts were made by the writers, producers, and fans to save the show, obviously to no avail. "Terriers" was produced by "The Shield's" Shawn Ryan and written by "Ocean's 11" scribe, Ted Griffin.
When I tweeted the news of the cancellation this morning, a couple local fans of the show retweeted, all with a similar sentiment: bummer.
This really is a bummer for the San Diego economy. In September, shortly before "Terriers" launched, Karla Peterson at the U-T wrote that "Terriers" "is a big boost to the local economy. It is the first non-reality series to shoot in San Diego since the short-lived CBS dramedy 'The Ex List' decamped in 2008. The 106-member crew includes 75 to 80 locals, and 20th Century Fox Studios estimates it will spend at least $17 million in San Diego by the time it wraps up production on the 13 'Terriers' episodes."
Bummer, indeed.
