Are you burning to know what Burning Man is all about? Check out the Burning Man Film Festival Saturday February 19 at the UltraStar Mission Valley at Hazard Center.
Burning Man is an annual event held in the Nevada desert. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy. It began in the 80s as a small gathering and now attracts tens of thousands.
“Many people think Burning Man is just a big rave in the desert, but it’s much more.” says festival planner Nicole Hickman in her press release for the festival. “It's about art, community building, and love. Many ‘Burners’ view Burning Man as an experiment in radical self-expression and engaging in life’s wonder and transcendence year-round, enabling Burners to constantly renew themselves. For example, Black Rock Arts Foundation supports interactive community art. Burners without Borders started by helping cities ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, and later came to Haiti's assistance after the earthquake. Black Rock Solar helps communities install solar arrays, and educates them regarding renewable energy. This film festival will be an entertaining and educational eye-opener, both for the ‘Burner-curious’ and those unfamiliar with Burning Man.”
Burning Man 2011 will be held August 29 through September 5 with the art theme being "Rite of Passage." The San Diego Burning Man Film Festival showcases a collection of shorts and feature length films made by members of the Burning Man community about the annual arts festival. The San Diego Burning Man Film Festival will screen films from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with an after party from 9:00 PM at Spin Nightclub in Old Town.
