Enjoy an uplifting comedy-drama about romance and second chances. Childhood sweethearts Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid), both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other all over again when they are reunited after nearly 60 years. The celebratory tale of the power of love at any age is also a story about family — a family with baggage. Alan and Celia’s daughters, whose dysfunctional lives bring drama at every turn, would never dream of getting in the way of their parents’ happiness. But somehow they just can’t help themselves.
Episode One airs Sunday, June 15 at 1 p.m. - Celia and Alan, childhood sweethearts reunited after 60 years, are stranded when Alan’s car is stolen. They phone their respective daughters, arrogant Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) and happy-go-lucky Gillian (Nicola Walker), to pick them up. Seconds before they actually meet, the women argue bitterly over a parking space. Celia and Alan introduce them to one another and make a surprising announcement.
Episode Two airs Sunday, June 15 at 2 p.m. - Celia and Alan are enjoying their new life together, but widowed Gillian and separated Caroline have problems with their respective children and partners. During Celia and Alan’s engagement party, Gillian’s son is arrested for assaulting his mother’s young lover.
Episode Three airs Sunday, June 15 at 3 p.m. - Celia and Alan decide on a civil marriage ceremony to be held at an eerie medieval hall near Halifax. As they visit, a storm is brewing, the lights go out and they’re locked in the ancient building. In the midst of a thunderstorm, Gillian’s Land Rover inexplicably catches fire.
Episode Four airs Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m. - A police search begins for Alan and Celia, who are locked inside the hall without phone service. Fearing for their parents and unable to sleep, Caroline and Gillian open up to one another and form a supportive bond. In the morning, the curator and his assistant find Alan and Celia.
Episode Five airs Sunday, June 22 at 2 p.m. - Caroline throws herself whole-heartedly into her relationship with Kate (Nina Sosanya). Alan and Celia have lunch in the pub with Harry and Maurice. Alan can’t decide which of them should be his best man, so he ends up asking them both!
Caroline tells John (Tony Gardner) that the ‘someone’ she’s seeing is a woman. Devastated with the implications, he doesn’t know who to turn to and ends up over at the farm, hoping for Gillian’s sympathy. Here he gets drunk and nastily tells Celia that her daughter is a lesbian. An appalled Celia insists on going home. Drunk Gillian invites John to go to bed with her.
Episode Six airs Sunday, June 22 at 3 p.m. - Celia reacts badly to John’s revelation that Caroline is gay. When she and Alan have dinner with Caroline and Kate, she’s very rude to Kate. Alan feels crushed after this, and tells Gillian that it’s over between him and Celia. Back in Harrogate, a livid Caroline gives Celia a dressing down. Celia duly apologizes to Kate and begs her not to leave Caroline. The next day Celia is shocked to learn that Alan's had a heart attack. She stays by his bedside, telling him that their wedding plans are back on now she’s made things right with Caroline. Against the odds, Alan regains consciousness.
