A Victorian-era department store is the setting for love, intrigue, and a revolution in retailing, with Joanna Vanderham ("What Maisie Knew") as Denise Lovett, a beautiful salesgirl and Emun Elliott (“Game of Thrones”) as John Moray, the ruthless, enigmatic store owner.
Adapted from Émile Zola’s classic novel, the glittering shopping spectacle also stars Patrick Malahide as Lord Glendenning, Elaine Cassidy as Katherine Glendenning, and Sarah Lancashire as Miss Audrey. This seven-part series originally aired in 2013.
Part One airs Sunday, July 6 at 11 p.m. - Young and ambitious country girl Denise Lovett arrives in a booming northern city and takes a job at The Paradise, the glittering department store across from her uncle’s drapery shop. It’s not long before her beauty and talent catch the eye of the store’s dashing owner, John Moray.
Denise struggles to navigate the competing personalities in the Ladieswear department where she has been placed. Can her ingenuity save the day when she’s faced with her first challenges as a shop girl?
Part Two airs Sunday, July 13 at 11 p.m. - When a baby is found in the Ladieswear department, everyone at The Paradise becomes caught up in the commotion. The secrets of more than one employee are revealed, and emotions run high as reactions to the infant differ. Denise is faced with a situation that forces her to use all her cunning and take a bold step.
Part Three airs Sunday, July 20 at 11 p.m. - Miss Audrey falls ill and Moray must appoint one of the girls as her substitute, causing the rivalry between Denise and Clara to intensify.
Meanwhile, Katherine is enjoying the affections of new suitor Peter Adler, but she is still conflicted about her lingering feelings for Moray. A surprising character finds the cause of Miss Audrey’s illness, and Moray steps in to bring her back to health.
Part Four airs Sunday, July 27 at 11 p.m. - Moray forges ahead with his plans to buy up the other shops on the street, reluctantly taking on a partner, while Katherine meddles with his efforts in an attempt to get his attention. Some light is shed on Jonas’ mysterious past and Denise learns a lesson when her latest idea doesn’t go as planned.
Part Five airs Sunday, August 3 at 11 p.m. - Exotic lovebirds arrive at The Paradise to be sold as the latest attraction, and Denise struggles to keep her feelings for Moray to herself. Miss Audrey, seeing the telltale signs of love, advises her to keep quiet, but will Denise be able to hide her emotions?
Part Six airs Sunday, August 10 at 11 p.m. - With her high-profile nuptials just around the corner, Katherine turns The Paradise upside-down as she prepares for what promises to be a dazzling society event.
Across the street, Denise proves her aptitude for business once again, though not all the shopkeepers are easily convinced. When Glendenning spots Moray consoling Denise, he warns Katherine of the threat. Will the wedding go ahead as planned or will Moray follow his heart?
Part Seven airs Sunday, August 17 at 11 p.m. - Trouble brews at The Paradise as the big day approaches. When a corpse is found in the river, word spreads that it is the body of Burroughs — and suspicion is quickly cast upon Jonas. Meanwhile, Moray cannot deny his love for Denise and plans to call off the wedding. But will he be able to follow through if it means losing The Paradise?
