A pair of iconic, and completely different, movies of the past 50 years will be featured in October in the Cinema @ The Balboa film series at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego.
The series, currently in the middle of its preview week, will resume Oct. 14 with the comedy "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," followed by the science fiction epic "2001: A Space Odyssey," Oct. 28.
Cinema @ The Balboa takes advantage of a state-of-the-art projection system at the historic theater, along with a huge screen and high definition sound.
The version of the Monty Python film that will be shown — which elicits guffaws with its horribly one-sided sword fights, coconuts subbing for trotting horses and morning collections of the dead — will include on-screen song lyrics and famous quotes.
Stanley Kubrick's visually stunning and thought-provoking "2001" was nominated for four Academy Awards and won one for visual effects.
The preview week for Cinema @ The Balboa started Sunday and is scheduled to continue tonight with a sing-along version of "Grease" at 7 p.m. "Lawrence of Arabia" is set for Friday night, with a "Mary Poppins" sing- along scheduled for the Sunday afternoon finale.
