For the third year the Women’s Museum is hosting a film festival and this year it is expanding to a new location.
The Women’s Film Festival will be a focused three days of films playing at The Lot at Liberty Station.
The annual international film festival is hosted by the Women's Museum of California in San Diego. It’s held in March in honor of Women’s History Month.
"(The festival) is focused entirely on giving women directors a platform and also making sure that we’re telling women’s stories, choosing films that tell women’s stories and it really connects back to our mission of once again giving women a platform, in one way or another, to have their voices heard and their meaningful stories be told," said Diane Peabody Straw, executive director at the museum.
The festival showcases shorts, features and documentaries from around the world. Most of the films will be followed by panels featuring filmmakers. Some panels will take place at the museum, which is located in Liberty Station near the cinema. The museum is also hosting a pop up exhibit highlighting women in film with a collection of items from the silent film era.
Straw said the Saturday night feature, "I am Jane Doe" focuses on "the stories of three young women and their mothers who are trying to legally fight Backpage.com, which was responsible for selling these girls in sex trafficking. It's an incredible story, it's narrated by Jessica Chastain."
Serious themes are the topic of many of the films, but the festival wants to showcase women filmmakers who work across a variety of genres. So you can also find the comedy "Different Flowers" about two sisters and the fallout from one's decision that she doesn't want to get married on her wedding day.
The Women's Film Festival runs Friday through Sunday at The Lot, Liberty Station.
