San Diego County property taxes are due on Monday. And the county tax collector said he is expecting a big bump in tax revenue again this year.
Those who don't pay their taxes by midnight Monday will see a 10 percent penalty tacked on to their bill. But the good news is that 99.2 percent of San Diego property owners do pay their taxes, according to county Treasurer and Tax Collector Dan McAllister.
The other good news, for funding government services, is rising property values are making tax revenues increase. McAllister said last year the county's property tax base was $6 billion.
"This year, we expect to collect $6.49 billion, which is up half-a-billion dollars. Pretty strong," he said.
Most property owners pay electronically. But if you'd rather write a check, there are some places across the county where you can drop it off Monday.
"We have five different locations throughout the county — South Bay, North County, Kearny Mesa, Downtown San Diego and El Cajon. And they can walk into any of our offices, 8 to 5 o'clock, Monday through Friday, and pay those taxes," said McAllister.
You can add to that list your local post office. A spokesperson for the treasurer's office said mailed property tax payments are on time if they are postmarked by Dec. 10, 2018. But using a mailbox won't do. You'd better drop it off at a post office if you want to be sure it is postmarked that day.
