UC San Diego will introduce incoming chancellor Pradeep Khosla today, one day after the University of California Board of Regents confirmed his appointment.
Khosla, 55, currently the dean of the highly regarded engineering school at Carnegie Mellon University, is scheduled to take over from Marye Anne Fox on Aug. 1. He will be introduced to the public in San Diego County at a late-morning news conference.
"With his transformative vision, passion and imagination, Pradeep Khosla will build on the accomplishments of Chancellor Fox and her predecessors,'' said UC President Mark Yudof. "He will elevate what already is a world-class university to new heights of excellence in teaching, research and community service.''
The regents approved compensation for Khosla that includes a raise of nearly $20,000 in base salary over what Fox makes, plus moving expenses and a car allowance. UC officials said state money would not be used for the increases.
However, Sen. Leland Yee said the money will come from the University Foundation and would be better spent on student services and scholarships following years of cutbacks in state funding for higher education and fee increases for pupils.
The India native, who is married with three children, emerged as the leading candidate following an international search. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2006 and has won several major awards in the field.
Khosla has authored three books and numerous articles. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and Masters and Doctorates in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon.
