The sixth bishop of the Catholic diocese of San Diego will be installed Wednesday at St. Therese of Carmel Church.
Robert McElroy's appointment by the Vatican was announced last month. He was an auxiliary bishop in San Francisco.
McElroy will succeed Cirilo Flores, who died last September after battling cancer and a stroke.
Cardinals Roger Mahony and William Leveda are scheduled to attend the 1 p.m. ceremony, according to the diocese. The archbishops of Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and retired archbishop of Portland are also set to attend, along with several hundred priests and deacons.
Those unable to make the ceremony can watch as it is streamed on the Internet at www.newce.com.
The diocese includes 98 parishes in San Diego and Imperial counties.
