Medical staff and other employees that work in health sciences at UCSD say proposed system-wide budget cuts don't make sense. Health science officials are asking the UC president for some flexibility.
The UC president has proposed an eight percent cut in salaries. He's also asking for university employees to take up to 12 days off a year without pay.
UCSD Health Sciences spokeswoman DeAnn Marshall says that's totally unrealistic. She says staff at UCSD hospitals have a lot of patients to take care of.
"And when you have to mandatorily furlough someone or cut their salary, and they're not available to provide patient care, that creates quite a hardship for a medical center," Marshall says.
Marshall says health sciences needs to be able to make its own decisions on how best to cut its budget.
UC Regents will consider a number of budget proposals when they meet later this month.
