China Quake Update: From the Rubble, a Survivor

People are a long way from returning to normal life in Southwestern China. One town near the epicenter will never be the same: China's official news agency says it lost close to 80 percent of its population.

Many thousands remain buried across a wide area. On Wednesday, Morning Edition hears from NPR's Melissa Block, who followed a Chinese couple as they tried to find anyone who could help pull their family from a collapsed building.

Rescue workers have to draw what hope they can from this story, though. A woman was pulled out of the rubble alive. She had been buried for 50 hours — more than two days — and she is eight months pregnant.
