As recalled in the new book "Stories from Sea Level," lifeguarding does in fact involve such heroics. However, it also has terror and tragedy, along with laughter, absurdity and a deep commitment to the people they serve.
Ed Vodrazka is the the former head lifeguard at Torrey Pines State Beach, and is just retiring from a career of 46 years as an ocean lifeguard.
He joined Midday Edition on Monday to reflect on his long career.
