"Garfield" Creator Apologizes for Veterans Day Strip

The creator of the hugely popular syndicated comic strip "Garfield" has apologized for a strip that ran on Veterans Day - read it here - that some saw as making fun of the holiday and of the military. The strip showed a spider warning Garfield that if the cat "squishes" him, an annual day of remembrance will be held in his honor. Garfield subsequently asks a group of spiders why they celebrate "National Stupid Day."

Creator Jim Davis issued a statement profusely apologizing and said the cartoon had been written almost a year previously and that Davis, who had a brother who served in Vietnam and a son who served in Afghanistan and Iraq as a Marine, had not known when it was going to appear.

Reaction in the blogosphere and in chat rooms was swift and diverse, but mostly supportive. Gawker's Max Read insists Davis does not hate veterans despite this strip:
