Historians credit William T. Cummings for the quote, "There are no atheists in foxholes." But according the Department of Defense (and reprinted by the New York Times), roughly 9,400 American servicemembers consider themselves atheists. And the Times reports that many of these troops want a chaplaincy - a spiritual guide to call their own.
This may sound like an oxymoron to some. But Army veteran Jason Torphy of the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers tells the Times:
Atheists and so-called "spiritual humanists" say getting the military to provide them with chaplains who share their beliefs would be a giant step towards legitimacy:
So I have a question for Home Post readers. If you're in the military, would you like to see a chaplain for atheists? Or is that something that would bother you? If so, why?
