There's a war going on against the Mississippi River - or at least that's how it's being described in the media - and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the only one fit for fighting in this scenario. The Washington Post describes the Army Corps' "battle to tame the swollen Mississippi" in its article about the Corps' strategy to destroy a levee last week in order to save the Illinois town of Cairo from complete annihilation.
Now there's a new campaign at hand today and a new strategy. The Army Corps of Engineers, as CNN puts it, is now "waging war against flooding of historic proportions" in the fight keep the Mississippi from spilling over its banks and flooding New Orleans.
