The San Diego company is the only shipbuilder on the West Coast capable of building large ocean-going vessels. NASSCO officials were warning earlier this year that the firm's workforce of 3,600 might be shrinking significantly this summer. That's because a congressional budget standoff was threatening to put some of their government contracts on hold.
NASSCO Vice President Don Dame said the congressional budget deal and new contracts have solidified the companies financial footing.
"The layoff notices under the Warren Act were in the 800s, maybe the low 900s. But we had told people that the number was approximately 350," said Dame.
He said fewer than 50 people will be laid off this summer and the company isn't worried about a potential budget impasse in August. All current contracts are secure and Dame said NASSCO will continue to pursue new contracts.
