Railroads Aim To Hire 5000 Veterans In 2012

The railroad industry announced today its goal to hire more than 5,000 veterans by the end of 2012. The industry is made up of roughly 500 companies and organizations.

Association of American Railroads President Ed Hamberger made the announcement today, along with Transportation Department Secretary Ray La Hood. The railroad's hiring goal is in conjunction with Joining Forces, an initiative backed by first lady Michelle Obama and second lady Dr. Jill Biden, that aims to honor military families and veterans.

Hamberger said today:

β€œRailroads offer people the chance to have true life-long careers in well-paying jobs. We are proud to offer our heroes transitioning from military service the opportunity for another career in service to our country.”

About a quarter of the railroad industry's current workforce has been in the military.
