Couples Therapy Helps Treat PTSD, Says New Study (Video)

A new study finds couples therapy helps treat the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

That's hopeful news for the estimated 20 percent of veterans who suffer from PTSD.

Dr. Candice Monson of Canada's Ryerson University is the lead author of the study. She says couples with one partner suffering from PTSD found PTSD symptoms improved when both partners attended therapy together:

“Research consistently documents that PTSD is one of the mental health conditions most associated with intimate relationship problems...

Now, there is increasing recognition that intimate relationships can play a vital role in the path to recovery for those with PTSD, and that relationships can improve along that path.”
Monson's study appears in today's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
