The Department of Defense is using its military planes to send power restoration experts from California to the East Coast to help those still in the dark after superstorm Sandy. According to Reuters:
The C-5 and C-17 military transport planes - designed to carry heavy military equipment, like tanks - began flying from March Air Reserve Base in southern California early on Thursday and were due to start arriving in the afternoon at an Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York.
CNN reports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was in the process of deploying roughly 100 high-volume water pumps to flooded areas in New York.
And the National Guard continues to play a major role in rescue efforts in the aftermath of Sandy. About 12,000 Guard soldiers and airmen have been deployed to clear roads and help with evacuations, according to The Pentagon Channel. The Associated Press is reporting the National Guard today will deliver more than one million meals, along with bottled water, to areas of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
