Carlos Arredondo was at the Boston Marathon finish line Monday to support the National Guard member who was running in honor of his son, Marine Lance Cpl. Alexander Scott Arredondo, who was killed in the Iraq War.
When two explosions created carnage around him, Carlos Arredondo sprang into action. Photos of him helping an injured bystander who lost both of his legs in the blasts have appeared in newspapers and on websites worldwide.
Arredondo said he had acted out of instinct, using training he had received as a fireman and a rescuer of injured bullfighters in Costa Rica.
“I did my duty,” he said.
Since his son's death, Arredondo has become a peace activist. He and his wife, Melinda, were at the Boston Marathon to cheer on National Guardsmen who are members of Run for the Fallen Maine.
