A new mobile app featuring familiar Sesame Street characters aims to help ease the stress of moving to an unfamiliar new home.
It's estimated children in military families move six to nine times between kindergarten and high school. Dr. Kelly Blasko, psychologist at the National Center for Telehealth and Technology, explains how the app can help...
"Moving can be stressful, and kids need to express feelings and say goodbye to people and things. The Muppet characters in this app help make the move a fun experience."
The app works this way:
- Children can use the app to help their Muppet friend make decisions on a variety of move-related issues like which toys to pack in a box and which to take along in their backpack.
- Children watch the Muppet say goodbye to their house, military base, and classroom and playground friends.
- Finally, at the new house, children help their Muppet unpack, settle into the home, and make new friends.
The Big Moving Adventure mobile application is the brainchild of a partnership between the Department of Defense and the Sesame Workshop. It was designed specifically for youngsters aged 3-5, although military kids of any age may find it useful when it's time for their families to move.
