Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice makes official key personnel changes that were first reported last week. Zalmay Khalilzad, who has served as U.S. ambassador to Iraq, has been nominated to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador in Pakistan, has been nominated to replace Khalilzad in Iraq.
If confirmed, they "will have two of the hardest and most consequential jobs in the world," Rice says. The changes, as well as changes on the military side, come as President Bush prepares to announce a new U.S. approach to Iraq later this week.
