Congress May Intervene on Web Music Copyrights

The Copyright Royalty Board, which sets rates for the royalties Webcasters must pay for streaming music, has rejected calls from outraged Webcasters to reconsider what they feel are unbearably high rates. Webcasters have until July 15 to make the new payments, which are retroactive to 2006.

Reps. Jay Inslee and Don Manzullo have introduced the Internet Radio Equality Act to nullify the board's new rates.

This week, the Senate followed suit. The last time higher rates were imposed, Congress stepped up. But it remains to be seen if the act will be passed before July 15.
