California Propositions Require Some Homework

But, it's still worth knowing where the political parties stand on the props. So I began my research and within minutes, I knew the California Democratic Party positions on the ballot propositions. But, although I searched and searched for the GOP recommendations, the closest I could come was one sentence in an article about the Democrats: "The California Republican Party has taken positions on several of the measures, including the gay (sic) marriage initiative, which it supports, and the measure advocating a high speed rail, which it opposes."

In desperation, I called the California Republican Party chairman Ron Nehring and asked where the party stood on the 11 propositions. The chairman confirmed that the Republicans are for the same-sex marriage ban, didn't mention the high-speed rail, and said they are opposed to the alternative fuels and renewable energy bond. Side note: the Democrats are neutral on that one after their executive board clashed on whether to support or oppose the proposition and even some alternative energy companies and environmental groups are opposing the initiative. As for the other eight propositions, Mr. Nehring promised to call me back with an answer.

So back to my original point - there's much more work to be done to prepare for November, and considering that there are 20 more initiatives and referenda circulating for signatures, and five others waiting for a raw count of their signatures, it's time to start reading. The alternative is not worth considering.
