Some Labor Day beachgoers are finding ways to float around San Diego’s beach booze ban. But the police will be watching closely.
A Facebook page announced the event, called Floatopia. The now offline page encouraged people to bring a raft and an adult beverage and head to the beach on Saturday. Once there, they could join others bobbing in the waves and drinking alcohol. The page says it’s all perfectly legal, as long as your feet aren’t touching the sand. San Diego Assistant Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman says the floaters have found a loophole.
“Technically yes, that is legal to do, but you still can’t be a minor in possession of alcohol. We will be enforcing that. And we’ll be working again with the Coastguard and the lifeguards to make sure that everybody does follow all the other water way rules,” she said.
Zimmerman said drinking and swimming or even just floating is not a good combination. She says extra officers will be on duty to patrol the beaches.
