San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders says the funding process for a new transportation center at the San Ysidro border crossing is moving forward. He was in Washington, D.C. earlier this week to lobby for the project.
A coalition of border business and community groups has said for the last few years that a transportation center is a critical piece of the San Ysidro border crossing remodel. Mayor Sanders repeated their message to federal officials.
"We have 25,000 pedestrians a day crossing that border crossing and they frequently need transportation to other parts of the city or they need it out of the city. So, the bus systems and the metro transit systems and the jitneys and all the rest of them need to have a place where people can access them and get where they need to go."
The nearly $600 million port remodel project does not cover the cost of the hub.
Sanders says federal officials will meet with state and local transportation groups to work out funding.
Members of the Smart Border Coalition applaud Sanders trip. They say the timing is critical because the remodel construction has already begun.
