A post-election survey finds that California voters aren’t thrilled with the initiative process, but they do value it – especially when they’re unhappy with their legislators according to the new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California.
According to the survey, two-thirds of California voters say the wording of the initiatives on last month’s ballot was too complicated or confusing. And fewer than half have confidence in their fellow voters to make public policy decisions. However most of them also say they’re very or somewhat happy that they had the chance to vote on the nine measures.
“They feel that the initiative process gives them an opportunity to weigh in on public policy in an environment in which they have little trust and confidence in our representative democracy,” Mark Baldassare with PPIC said.
According to the survey, only 12 percent of voters approve of the way the legislature is doing its job. And only 13 percent approve of the way the Governor and the legislature work together. The statewide poll of more than two-thousand Californians was conducted in early November.
