Port Moves Ahead With North Embarcadero Improvements
San Diego’s much debated and often litigated North Embarcadero Visionary Plan took a big step forward today.

The Unified Port of San Diego has hired a firm to oversee construction for the first phase of the North Embarcadero improvements. The move may seem routine, but after 12 years of planning, it’s a significant step in moving the project toward completion. The Port’s Marguerite Elicone said the area around Broadway and Harbor Drive will be a lot different.

“It’s going to be a much better pedestrian experience down there,” she said. “And it’s going to really make our waterfront, really give it that wow factor when you bring visitors down to San Diego.”

The next step is hiring a firm to do the actual construction for the $29 million project. Elicone said there will be a lot to do.

“They’re going to widen the esplanade down there on the waterfront. It’s going to be more than 100 feet wide in some areas,” she said. “There’s going to be areas where people can have events. There’s going to be public art. There’s going to be a public restroom, improved ticket kiosks.”

If everything stays on track, two years from now the renovations will be done.

During its meeting, the Port also approved construction of Ruocco Park. That’s a 3.3 acre park between The Midway Museum and Sea Port Village. It’s scheduled to open in late 2012.
