The Democratic head the California Senate says Cal State University Trustees should be sent a message after they voted this week to raise the pay for two new C-S-U presidents. The Trustees’ vote came a day before the Senate Education Committee considered bills that would limit C-S-U executive compensation. Senate President Pro-Tem Darrell Steinberg (STYNE-burg) says the Trustees’ sense of timing is not good. “The fact of the matter is, that the C-S-U folks are tone deaf. The day before the bill hearing, they sort of put it right in our face,” said Steinberg.
The Senate Education Committee approved a ten-percent cap on C-S-U executive pay raises, reflecting a policy implemented by C-S-U Trustees earlier this year. At the time, Trustees were criticized for raising executive pay while increasing student tuition.
Steinberg says he wants to “beef up” the legislation now working its way through the Senate and has suggested that the cap should apply to other executives.
