17 Million Californians Register for June 5th Primary

17 Million Californians Register for June 5th Primary
The latest report from the Secretary of State shows a million more Californians have registered to vote since the last Presidential Primary.

Seventeen million Californians have registered to vote in the state's June 5th Presidential Primary. While that's more than four years ago, voters who claim a political party when they register has dropped two percent to almost seventy-eight percent.

About forty-four percent of voters registered as Democrats, thirty percent registered Republican. The Secretary of State said more people eligible to register are doing so. That's increased from 70 to 72 percent in four years.

This primary is the first statewide election under California's top-two candidates open primary.

A big decision awaits some voters this July as the race for San Diego County’s Supervisor District 1 seat heats up. Are you ready to vote? Check out the KPBS Voter Hub to learn about the candidates, the key issues the board is facing and how you can make your voice heard.
