California Governor Jerry Brown is kicking off a fresh wave of campaign events for his November sales and income tax measure.
At a lunchtime rally at UCLA Tuesday, Brown described the impact of years of state budget cuts to education – cuts he said Proposition 30 would begin to reverse:
“30,000 fewer teachers, thousands of fewer classes being offered – it’s a downward spiral. We’re cannibalizing our schooling and our future.”
The governor’s measure leads in polls, but it’s slipped a few points and now hovers barely over fifty percent. It’s coming under attack not just from anti-tax and small business groups, but also from the chief backer of a rival education tax initiative, Proposition 38.
Tuesday’s event is the first stop in a new campaign trip for Brown. The governor last campaigned for the measure in August.
