This election brought a change that many California women lawmakers said is disappointing. As it stands now, only 30 females are serving in the state legislature. That could increase as one race remains undecided.
Still, it’s the lowest number of women serving in the state legislature since 2000.
“It’s really shocking, California has led the way in so many areas but we still have a long way to go when it comes to electing women to the state legislature,” commented Assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal, Vice Chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus.
Lowenthal said without enough female legislators, she fears women’s issues – such as health, safety and equality - will go unaddressed.
She asserted that women involved in government at the local level need more encouragement to run for higher office.
