A new poll shows a tight race between the two candidates for San Diego Mayor, time is running out to complete the 2020 Census, and more people in San Diego County are dying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tightening Race For San Diego Mayor

Two months out from the election, we have new polling on the matchup between Barbara Bry and Todd Gloria. The two Democrats hold similar views, but will try to differentiate themselves to voters in the weeks ahead. The winner will also take charge of a major redevelopment of the Midway District, in which a winning proposal was chosen by the city earlier this week.

Crunch Time For The Census

Local census response numbers show which neighborhoods in San Diego are outpacing expectations and which areas are lagging. The once-per-decade population count is on a shorter schedule this year and is expected to wrap up by the end of September. The changing schedule has been a flashpoint in how the process has been manipulated by the Trump administration to potentially reduce participation, which could lead to reduced services for undercounted communities in the years ahead.

Dying At Home From COVID-19

One of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic is the scattered approach to healthcare and hesitancy by some to even seek it out when they experience symptoms. That dilemma is reflected in local death statistics that show an uptick in people dying at home this year. Not all of those deaths are attributable to the virus, but one family’s experience in San Marcos shows how staying informed and doing the right thing can be a struggle for those who get sick.
