The San Diego Police Department is advising drivers to avoid the area around Qualcomm Stadium this evening and throughout the weekend. A Jehovah’s Witness Convention at the stadium is expected to draw large crowds.
About 30,000 people are expected each day for the event. It runs through Sunday. Police spokeswoman Monica Munoz says traffic for the convention is different from a normal sporting event.
“If we have Chargers games, people usually tend to come two or three hours before the event and spend time relaxing and enjoying themselves in the stadium parking lot,” she says. “At this event the services start at a specific time and that is 9:20 in the morning so there is a large volume of people who will be arriving between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m or 9:30 in the morning.
Services are scheduled to end around 5 p.m. throughout the weekend. Munoz says drivers headed to the stadium or who plan to be in the area should be aware of the traffic situation and be patient. The police department says many of the visitors for the event are from out of town and may not know their way around very well.
