Mexican authorities have discovered what's presumed to be a smuggling tunnel under construction just a few hundred feet from the U.S. Mexico border fence.
The tunnel begins inside a dilapidated shed in an industrial area of the city, less than a mile west of the Otay Mesa border crossing.
It travels a couple of hundred yards underground up to the border fence. Authorities say it does not cross into San Diego.
The tunnel's construction is rudimentary compared to others that have been unearthed in the area.
Bare bulbs are strung the length of the passageway. The walls and floor are bare dirt. The opening is about six feet tall and four feet wide.
U.S. federal authorities say they're helping their Mexican counterparts with the investigation.
