A contamination alert was in effect today in Coronado following a sewage spill along the Silver Strand.
A sanitation system failure began sending wastewater overflowing from the 5000 block of State Route 75 in Coronado about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the county Department of Environmental Health.
By the time city personnel got the problem under control roughly a half- hour later, an estimated 200 gallons of sewage had escaped, said DEH spokesman Mark McPherson said. Crews were able to recover about 150 gallons, but the rest flowed into a storm drain that empties near a beach at Crown Cove Aquatic Center on Glorietta Bay.
Signs warning of sewage contamination will stand along a stretch of shoreline in the area until follow-up samples deem the harbor waters safe again for recreational use.
