Fiesta de Reyes in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is planning a Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebration like no other in San Diego – a free, family-friendly immersive experience designed to bring the spirit of this traditional annual Mexican and South American celebration to life for San Diegans of all ages. The anchor concession in the state park, Fiesta de Reyes has become renowned as a vibrant hub for celebrations that honor the multicultural traditions of the San Diego region. Dubbed Dia de los Muertos – La Experiencia and now in its 4th year, the event is slated to run from October 1 through November 2. Dia de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd each year. Dia de los Muertos is a community-wide celebration of the history, Hispanic culture and rich heritage of the region. It is at this time of year that the spirits of loved ones who have died are thought to return to Earth to celebrate with friends and family. It is traditionally a time to gather and celebrate and remember the lives of those who are no longer with us. Throughout the month of October, the Fiesta de Reyes courtyard at the north end of the state park will be filled with fanciful, humorous, and visually stimulating décor, offered as tributes to many of San Diego’s early citizens. Many life-sized Catrina skeleton dolls in fancy dress, and many larger-than-life size, hold court at Fiesta de Reyes throughout the event. This year, there will be more than 60 unique Dia de los Muertos displays in Fiesta de Reyes, thousands of marigolds – a traditional flower associated with Dia de los Muertos – will fill the courtyard with color, and there will be an expanded live entertainment schedule on the Fiesta de Reyes stage. Staff will dress in festive attire associated with Day of the Dead and merchants will host both traditional and more contemporary Dia de los Muertos altars throughout the plaza. Both Casa de Reyes Restaurant and Barra Barra Saloon will feature special menu selections throughout the run of the event. Guests are encouraged to visit Fiesta de Reyes during the two weeks leading up to October 1, to watch the transformation of the plaza as it happens. It’s a chance to watch artistic process that is required to create a spectacular new world. “Fiesta de Reyes is and always has been about family and Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of family, so our goal is to honor that in as big and vibrant way we possibly can,” said Ryan Ross, director of Fiesta de Reyes. “Each year, we add to the celebration to honor the traditions that are such a defining part of the history and culture of San Diego. As always, we want folks to experience the spirit of this important aspect of our history by walking into a different world when they come through our gates.” Fiesta de Reyes is open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day with extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Free parking is available throughout Old Town with extra parking available across Taylor Street in the CalTrans parking lot all day on weekend days and after 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The Neighborhood House in Logan Heights became the heart of the Mexican and Mexican American community in San Diego. Begun in 1914 by a group of wealthy Victorian socially progressive women including Mary and Helen Marston as a settlement house with the explicit goal of “Americanizing” Mexican immigrants, it evolved over time to be a site of community activism and civic participation for the next generation of Mexican American youth walking through its doors. Colloquially known as La Neighbor, the Neighborhood House was the nexus of relations in Logan Heights and offered integral services like health care, food distribution, English-language classes, a community oven, citizenship classes, and enrichment activities. This new exhibition brings together the written history of the house, along with nearly twenty new oral history interviews from former Logan Heights residents and Neighborhood House participants who were impacted by its services. The Neighborhood House Association continues today commemorating its 110th anniversary as a much different organization since its founding. Examining the history of Neighborhood House through the first sixty years shows us the ways in which individuals and governments have responded to pervasive social issues like poverty and lack of access to health care and education. It also shows the ways in which community is built and the next generation is fostered, despite continued vulnerability and the challenges posed by policy and planning decisions outside of local control. Dive into the world of theater with our latest exhibition, "Alex Katz: Theater and Dance," and draw costume designs inspired by friends and loved ones and set designs inspired by a memorable place or somewhere that you have always wanted to visit. Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. In this new 4-week art series, consider what story you want to tell through your theater-inspired artwork and take inspiration from your own life to create. Imagine yourself, your friends, and your family, each depicted in the costume designs they would wear in a play about your lives, and design a set or backdrop where a scene from your life might play out. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, these workshops offer a fun and supportive space to explore new creative possibilities! Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Registration gives participants access to the full series (four workshops). Consider what type of clothes each member in your group might wear–what scene will you be depicting and what type of clothes make sense in it? Will it be everyday clothes or something for a special trip or occasion? You will create your own costume designs through a combination of drawing and tracing. October 3 & 10: Set Design Drawing Create a set design drawing for the theater production of your life inspired by Katz’s set designs. Imagine important or exciting moments in your life and how these might look in a play or reimagine the event happening in a location that you long to visit. Consider whether your set design drawing will be for an interior or exterior location. What would be included in this space? Perhaps a couch or a tree. You will design these, drawing and imagining your world as a stage where costumes and sets work together to bring your theater-inspired artworks to life. Sunday, September 7, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. This beginner 3-hour woodworking workshop will acquaint students with a woodturning lathe, its parts, the tools needed, safety tips, tool sharpening techniques and how to shape wood on a lathe. The class will consist of students learning to round a piece of square stock, learning the four basic cuts and turning a honey dipper as their take home project. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older.
