Union Hall Gallery presents "Hiding in Plain Site," the debut retrospective by San Diego-based artist and designer Joseph A. Henseler, opening Saturday, July 12, 2025. The exhibition features 88 original works—ranging from sculpture and stained glass to painting and architectural design—created over the course of 30 years without public display. The show offers a rare glimpse into the deeply introspective practice of an artist who has quietly created in communion with nature, spirit, and self. Having moved across the country to live in the mountains of San Diego County to be mentored by renowned artist James Hubbell, Henseler’s work is rooted in reflection, emotional depth, and human connection. Opening night includes live music, refreshments, and a Q&A with the artist. The final night of the exhibition will feature a special live performance by Henseler’s wife, Chilean vocalist Lorena Isabell. For designers, creatives, and the general public interested in natural color in textiles and its possible modifications. Learn from the experts! This class is led by Mildred and Sama Barrios, who run a Mexico-based natural color studio called SUULA. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of modifying natural color. In the realm of natural dyeing, modifiers involve the partial or total application of substances such as vinegar, iron oxide, and baking soda, among others, to fabric dyed with natural dyes. This process alters the tone of the dye, allowing for a wider variety of colors or the creation of patterns and designs on the fabric. Some dyes react more strongly than others to these modifiers. The San Elijo Lagoon needs your help to restore precious habitats within the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve and the surrounding areas. By removing invasive plants and helping grow native plants indigenous to the area, you will support a more balanced ecosystem. Nature Collective is a local conservation and science education nonprofit organization. They work to restore habitats, provide healthier waters, and increase wildlife diversity. Leucadia-based mixed media artist Roy Jenuine hosts an exhibit – "Roy Jenuine: Modern Folk Art" – in Solana Beach, showcasing a lifetime of work from 1978 through today. Jenuine has spent his life’s work blending wood, photography and found materials to create artful masterpieces spanning functional furniture to mixed-media assemblage. The temporary, early summer exhibition will take place from June 9 and run through July 6, with an opening night reception, Friday, June 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Following the opening party, which is open to the public, the gallery will be open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jenuine’s work explores materials, finishes, and craftsmanship, as well as observations about his surroundings. He finds humor in the everyday, captures nostalgia, pushes the boundaries of function and form. He aligns himself with folk art and architecture, addressing both complex modernist aesthetics and found elements from the salvage yard. Drawing from his childhood in Los Angeles, early 1970s residency at the radical architectural project Arcosanti, and formal training at San Diego State University, Jenuine has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary that is rigorous, fun, meditative and truly original.
