  • Melissa Villasenor broke barriers by becoming the first-ever Latina cast member of "Saturday Night Live." A comedic impressions expert, she got her start as a semifinalist on "America’s Got Talent." Some of Melissa’s most memorable "SNL" impressions include Owen Wilson, Lady Gaga, and Dolly Parton. An accomplished voice actor, she has voiced characters on several television shows including Nickelodeon’s "OK K.O.!" and "Rock, Paper, Scissors," and in films "Toy Story 4" and "Wreck It Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet," for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. Melissa was a guest on Jerry Seinfeld’s "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," and can be seen in "Barry," "Crashing," and "Awkwafina is Nora From Queens," to name a few. Her multihyphenate talents range even further. Melissa hosted the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards, published a self-help journal "Whoops, I’m Awesome," recorded two music albums, had a Nelix special, and creates fine art.   • The seasons are changing, and it’s a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you’ll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Craft Collective approximately one week after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class).   • Disabled veterans from across the United States are in San Diego this week for the Department of Veterans Affair's annual Summer Sports Clinic.
  • Generally offered at 1 p.m. on the 4th Sunday of the month, plus some Fridays from late May to late August. This walking tour focuses on the Presidio de San Diego, buried underground below the Serra Museum. Learn about the historical significance of this site going back to deep time, how the unique river and marine environment attracted people to the site since time immemorial. Discover how archaeologists and historians have been able to understand what buildings and structures were there, and reconstruct what they may have looked like. Afterwards, browse around the new exhibition inside the Serra Museum. Hear from Kumeyaay people today, the people that lived along the river’s edge since time immemorial, as well as the stories of people that came to settle the area, and why the Presidio continues to be a significant site.   • In this first beginner sewing class students will learn how to thread a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, sew a straight stitch and pivot a corner. We will construct a pillow case together. You will also learn some very basic info about fabrics. If time allows for each student you will also learn how to finish your raw edges of the fabric using a zigzag stitch. You will leave class with a finished pillowcase. All materials are included. It’s best to learn on your own sewing machine, but you may also borrow one of ours. Please note, if bringing your own sewing machine it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. You will need all the cords, the manual, the presser foot, at least 1 bobbin and the bobbin case. Check this ahead of time. ***If you’re attending with your child, and participating only as support, just purchase 1 enrollment. No experience necessary. Adults and age 7+ (with adult) welcome!
