Even better is the wonderful surprise of receiving a handmade card to treasure. We will make simple cards with leaf prints, as well as more intricate cards with interesting folds. Making cards is a great way to relax, offers a straightforward creative outlet, and produces beautiful items to share with friends and family. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils, a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or very small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. Optional/recommended: 12” centering ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials will be provided to create the cards and make envelopes for them. Tuesday–Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. March 25 – 27 (3 Days, 18 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Geoff begins all classes with lessons in watercolor handling, notably the relationship between brush mixture and paper moisture and the concept of connection. During the daily demonstrations, the class will cover color mixing, brush handling, and contour drawing skills. Painting from life gives you the opportunity to observe directly from nature different forms of light and surfaces. There will be a focus on impressionistic interpretations of fruit and flowers through the use of watercolor techniques to express form: wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brushing, splattering, lifting, and most importantly adding water. Each year the ARCS Foundation, San Diego Chapter, a non-profit organization led entirely by women, hosts a Scientist of the Year fundraiser to honor a preeminent local scientist. This year’s honoree, Dr. Rob Knight, has dedicated his career to the study of microbiomes–the microorganisms that live in the environment and the human body. His research is relevant for a wide range of practical applications, and his affiliations on campus reflect the deep interdisciplinary nature of his work. Knight is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the UC San Diego School of Medicine; and a professor in the Shu Chien-Gene Lay Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering, where he is also the founding director of the UC San Diego Center for Microbiome Innovation. Also at UC San Diego, Knight is affiliated with the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI) and the Institute for Engineering in Medicine (IEM). ARCS San Diego invites you to join them for a celebration of science and scientists that is set for Sunday, April 13 (4-8 p.m.) at The Conrad Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. In addition to honoring Dr. Knight, the program will pay tribute to this year’s ARCS Scholars – all 50 of them – along with distinguished ARCS Scholar alumna, Dr. Kathryn Patras, Assistant Professor of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. All funds raised at this event will support future ARCS Scholars. Through their research, these talented Scholars make outstanding contributions to advance science and keep America competitive on the global stage, which is the ARCS mission. Kids explore fiber arts & repair a favorite stuffy or plush toy! Monday through Friday July 21 – 25 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Fiber Arts Summer Camp is all about exploring and experimenting with fiber arts! Does your child have an interest in fiber arts and learning to dye, sew, macramé and mend their favorite worn-out dolls & stuffed animals? In this fun week, kids will explore STEAM principles through: *Learning the science of Indigo natural dye, *Exploring traditional techniques using needle & thread, *Mending their own favorite plushies by engineering creative (& often colorful solutions), *Taking a fun dive into the arts via lots of cool craft mediums, *And, applying conceptual math to macramé, the visual art of knots! Note: We recommend that you wash your stuffy ahead of time, allowing time for it to dry thoroughly. Use your best judgement on whether it should go in the washing machine or be gently hand washed. If your child doesn’t have a stuffy to repair, let us know as we have items to learn and practice on in the studio. This camp is for kids ages 7-12 years.
