The Best Costume first place recipient will receive a one-night stay in a Sanctuary Studio Suite at Mission Pacific Hotel and a $150 food and beverage credit.   • Prepare for the pet pawty of the season as TrustedHousesitters and The Animal Pad partner together to host Howl-O-Ween on Saturday, October 22! From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Amici Amphitheater in Little Italy, attendees and their furry friends are encouraged to dress up in their cutest (but comfy) Halloween costumes while perusing through pet-friendly photo booths, artwork, and pet goodies. The free pet adoption event will also feature caricature drawings of pets by Marco, pet friendly photo opps, raffles and prizes! At this spooky pawty, guests will have the chance to snap cute photos with their in cute Halloween themed photo areas, take home original pet caricature drawings, and meet other pet owners or soon to be pet parents. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter raffles periodically throughout the day for only $1. All proceeds from the raffles will go towards The Animal Pad, a volunteer based 501 C3 non-profit all breed dog rescue that saves dogs from high kill shelters in Southern California and the streets of Mexico.   • This year's Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to research on how light and matter act on an atomic scale.
  • Band leader and beloved piano player for many years in San Diego, Sue is known as the Queen of Boogie Woogie and always manages to entertain with fun and flair. She has won many San Diego Music Awards, with various bands, and toured the world with the late blues artist Candye Kane, for 8 years. In 2008 her album "Sophisticated Ladies" won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis for Best (unsigned) CD. The City of San Diego named a day after her, also in 2008. Vocalist Liz Ajuzie is a jazz and blues singer and is a big fan of 40s jazz. A first generation American, her Nigerian parents introduced her to the music of Nat King Cole, as well as her African roots, and now she is exploring the early R&B music of the 50s and 60s with enthusiasm. Liz draws inspiration from many artists, including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Judy Garland, Dinah Washington, Mae West, Lavern Baker, and Ruth Brown. Free concerts at noon every Monday from fall through spring . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles. . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Mini-Concerts take place every Monday at noon and last about an hour. The concerts will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for these events. Doors open at 11:50 a.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. These events will be presented in compliance with State of California and County of San Diego health regulations as applicable at the time of each concert. Masks optional.
