May is National Preservation Month, and Coronado is joining communities nationwide in celebrating our unique heritage! We're fortunate to have so many meaningful historic places, and we'll be highlighting them throughout the month. Our celebrations include a City Council Proclamation, the presentation of plaques to recently designated historic homes, and the beloved Historic Home Tour on Mother's Day, May 11. The celebrations will culminate in the annual Preservation Symposium on Thursday, May 15 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The program will include a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the presentations from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Join Coronado MainStreet, the Historical Association, and the City of Coronado for the Preservation Symposium sponsored by the Coronado Community Foundation as we champion preservation in our community. This year's speakers include a City Planner who will outline the City's approach to historic preservation, as well as keynote speaker Elsa Sevilla. Host of KPBS's HISTORIC PLACES, Elsa will share how she approaches her work incorporating history into entertaining media. In the latest from the series, Elsa steps inside the legendary Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Monument, as it undergoes a stunning transformation. As painters, we need to know basic color theory and color mixing to make our work look vibrant and alive. In this class we will explore the four basic ideas behind color and the ways we mix and make it all work for successful paintings. We will deal with primary colors, building blocks for all hues; secondary colors, created from two primary colors; and tertiary colors, formed by mixing a primary and a secondary—as well as hue, value, and color temperature. Our class will create color studies using the classic color wheel. This is about color and color relationships in our compositions. We will do a color study and then a full painting from that study—for example, making a green color chart, then making a painting in greens, or a color chart in earth tones, then a painting in earth tones. There are new exercises for painters who have taken this class in the past. Come join us; all levels are welcome. Let’s explore this informative and exciting subject. We are going to have a lot of fun, along with learning, and you will have charts to refer to for years to come. Qué onda, friends! It's an incredible moment to be a soccer fan in San Diego and across the border region! The arrival of San Diego FC, Major League Soccer's newest franchise, has unleashed a wave of soccer fever throughout the entire community. We tagged along with Barra 18, one of the official supporter groups of SDFC, to catch an away game and learn firsthand what's got fans buzzing with excitement. Later, we sat with KPBS's Jacob Aere, producer of the digital mini-series “Soccer a la frontera” to talk about the history and culture of soccer in the region and putting this 5-part series together.
