  • Rafael Payare, conductor Matthias Goerne, baritone San Diego Symphony Orchestra Mahler: Selections from The Boy's Magical Horn (Des Knaben Wunderhorn) Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major, WAB 104, “Romantic” Few literary works had as significant an influence throughout the 19th century as "The Boy's Magical Horn" (Des Knaben Wunderhorn); its mix of everyday experience and the supernatural and bizarre were a perfect match for the Romantic movement. Mahler, one of the greatest songwriters of all time, used these texts as the basis for his own creation, evoking the lives and feelings of ordinary people in extraordinary times. (Of the dozen or so songs that Mahler orchestrated in this collection, six of them will be heard on this concert: "Rheinlegendchen," "Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen," "Das irdische Leben," "Urlicht," "Revelge" and "Der Tambourg’sell".) Bruckner’s spacious symphonies are filled with images of the countryside and high mountains of his native Austria; his Symphony No. 4, “Romantic” is especially loved for its magnificent writing for the horns, using these instruments to suggest wild huntsmen riding across a landscape. Gustav Mahler's beautiful melodies evoke the lives and feelings of ordinary people in extraordinary times. Mahler’s much-loved teacher was Anton Bruckner, whose gloriously spacious symphonies are filled with images of the green countryside and high mountains of his native Austria. • Creative Connections: SEL Through Contemporary Art with the ArtReach Learning Portal In this hands-on professional development workshop, educators will learn two creative projects, based on contemporary art practices, that integrate Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Participants will explore how these art forms can encourage self-expression, emotional processing, and social connection in the classroom. The session will also introduce the ArtReach Learning Portal, offering resources and tools to support SEL-focused art education. Educators will leave with ready-to-implement projects and access to a rich digital platform for continued learning and inspiration. This professional development workshop will focus on strategies art educators can use to incorporate contemporary artists into their lesson plans and to strengthen their confidence in speaking to and teaching from contemporary art. Focusing on artists from California, the San Diego/Tijuana border region, and arts resources within San Diego County, this workshop will provide culturally relevant touchstones for lesson development that reflect the intersectional identities of San Diego students. The session will provide hands-on art making activities that can then be applied directly in classrooms. In addition to supporting culturally responsive curriculum and contemporary arts focus, the lessons will also promote social emotional learning (SEL) by engaging the 5 SEL competencies of CASEL 5. Participants will walk away with resources, strategies, and lessons to immediately implement in their classrooms. All lessons are supported by the National Core Arts Standards. • Don’t miss this chance to experience the vibrant sounds of jazz in a lively community setting! The Ian Harland Quartet features Ian Harland on vibraphone, John Opferkuch on piano, Doug Walker on bass, and Tyler Kreutel on drums. Native San Diegan Ian Harland has been playing music since he was seven. A long-time drummer, while studying at SDSU he became increasingly interested in harmony and composition, which led his studies towards mallets rather than a drum set. When his teacher, Anthony Smith, moved to New York, Harland bought Smith’s vibraphone and set out to become fluent as an improviser and composer on the instrument. He now records and performs professionally as a vibraphonist. He graduated from SDSU with a bachelor’s and master’s in Jazz studies. John Opferkuch pursued his education, graduating from Yale in music while honing his jazz from stellar musicians like Joshua White and Peter Sprague (both of whom have performed at Osher) and performing on the piano with numerous professional ensembles. Versatile bassist Doug Walker pours his love of music into every performance. He has been on the San Diego scene since 2001, backing up many of the city’s renowned artists across the spectrum of musical genres. His particular passion for modern jazz has afforded him performances with many local legends and has inspired an abundance of original compositions and arrangements. Tyler Kreutel, born and raised in San Diego, took up the drums at the age of 12 in his middle school jazz band and hasn’t looked back since. Tyler graduated from The San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2012 and went on to receive his bachelors in music performance at California State University Long Beach. This is a jazz quartet of incomparable talent and the performance on October 3 is free and open to potential new members and their guests.
