The Escondido Public Art Commission and Escondido City Council – together with the Escondido Downtown Business Association and Visit Escondido – announce April as ‘Arts, Culture and Creativity Month’ (ACCM) in Escondido. Throughout the month (of April), Escondido will host a variety of free events and resources in celebration of arts, culture, and creativity. The Public Art Commission is excited to fund nine projects that celebrate Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month this spring. All events are free to the public. The following are the recipients and the funded projects: - ArtHatch will host a month-long April Arts Showcase beginning April 12 - ESCO Alley Art & Downtown Business Association will complete a Community Unity School Initiative project at John Paul the Great University - CoLabCrafts will host weekly Escondido Makes Art workshops tailored to various ages and skill levels. - Escondido Arts Association will hold the Mayor's Art Contest and Exhibition, April 9 – May 2 A gallery reception will take place April 12 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. - Escondido Choral Arts Foundation and California Center for the Arts, Escondido will host a First Wednesday at The Center Concert. The musical festival showcase will be on April 2 from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. - Glass House Arts and California Center for the Arts will display a temporary sculpture installation * (pronounced star). The installation will be on display all month on the lawn of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. - Escondido Arts Partnership will host two events: o Local Color and Ripple Effects, and o An opening day event in Heritage Garden on April 1. - Stone & Glass and California Center for the Arts will present a live glass blowing demonstration April 18 and 19 - Daydream Here Gift Shop will host an Escondido Art Tank a Shark Tank style pitch event on April 28. In this class designed for beginner to intermediate students, participants will learn step-by-step the fundamentals of wheel throwing, trimming and glazing. It’s the perfect class to get an initial experience of working with clay and make gifts for loved ones. Includes: class clay, firing and glazing. All students receive one month of FREE MEMBERSHIP at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course. In this six week class students ages 13-17 will begin by learning the basics, focusing on 3 essential steps of the throwing process: centering, opening, and pulling. Students will be led in working with ceramics, hand-building and wheel throwing, learning slab construction, pinch pots, surface texture, clay impression and more. Artists enjoy painting in “the golden hour” because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to work quickly. Daily demonstrations in acrylic, oil, pastel, and watercolor will be short to allow students time to work. On the first day we will meet at Sunset Point Park on the grass. Subsequent locations will be based on students’ preferences. Please note that there may be locations without immediate access to restroom facilities. Please plan ahead. Since instruction is individual, artists of any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene they prefer. No matter how warm it is when you leave home, bring a jacket anyway. DIRECTIONS to Sunset Point Park: From I-5 take Sea World Drive West to Ingraham Street/West Mission Bay Drive. Take West Mission Drive. Once you are on West Mission Bay Drive, turn right at Dana Landing Road, and then immediately turn left into the Sunset Point Park parking lot. Materials: Students should bring their preferred mediums or buy recommended supplies that follow: Only buy what you plan to use. For those using pastels: Rembrandt, box of 90 or 180, or NuPastel, box of 96; Canson-brand pastel paper #429, 426, or 431 (quartered); foam core drawing board at least 1/2” larger than the size of paper you plan to use; four clips to hold paper; paper towels. For those using oils: French easel or lap easel; stretched canvas or canvas board, up to 16” x 20”; brushes #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 (two of each); odorless Gamsol thinner; small cup or jar; rags; small hand mirror (for seeing errors in reverse); a warm and cool tube of at least seven colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Titanium White. Optional: Raw Umber, Scarlet Lake. For those using acrylics: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters. For those using watercolors: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters—but white is optional; flat or pointed brushes; watercolor blocks; chair or easel; Kleenex; 1/2 or 3/4” masking tape to crop image. Please be sure to bring an extra canvas or extra paper in case you have time to begin a second painting.
