Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the San Diego Humane Society located at 5500 Gaines St. Every year hundreds of animals including turtles and tortoises are found as strays — so in honor of World Turtle Day, San Diego Humane Society is offering a microchip clinic to keep pet turtles and tortoises safe! Microchips are $40 per chelonian, and all turtles and tortoises must have a shell diameter of at least 10 centimeters. Learn to needle felt! Sunday, February 9, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Experience the magic of wool and learn how to paint using needle felting techniques! In this 3-hour workshop, we will create a marine landscape by layering and felting wool, as well as blending colors together. The addition of yarns will add texture and hues to your creation. Ocean and sunset make wonderful subjects for needle paintings! This class requires the use of sharp needles and you will be provided with fingers guards. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome. Note: Though this class is offered as part of the "Certificate in Poetry", there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this final workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. - Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. - Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. - Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. - Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts. The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents a show full of invention, discovery, and youth creativity in the new work "The Apocalypse Project" by Briandaniel Oglesby as its next Protostar Social Issues Series student production. It’s 2030. Four years ago, everyone over the age of 20 disappeared from the planet. No one knows why. Then it happened again. On the Altierra compound in Texas, young T dreams of the internet returning so she can be a YouTuber and document her generation. When a crisis expels a group, she joins the exiles on a trek across the broken land. This group faces constant danger as they search for safe-harbor – and possibly the answer to the question of what happened — at the rumored New Eden. This is a play about what happens when the young are left to deal with the disasters in a world they didn’t create. Along the way, the crew experience a strange and yet recognizable landscape. They encounter an authoritarian farm, anarchist Firestarters, feral children, Sad Disneyland, and ruined hometowns. There are moments of intensity and plenty of humor in this play that’s about climate change, social change, coming-of-age, immigration, and the current moment. Director Benjamin Cole is thrilled to share the dramatic journey of confusion, chaos, and acceptance experienced in this creative new play. “How would you cope as a teenager if all the adults suddenly disappeared,” Cole questions. “We’re challenging our students to take ownership of how they’d take responsibility for themselves and others.” he offers. The show runs a daring 1 hour and 40 minutes with one intermission and aims to inspire audiences throughout.
