Come and explore the gorgeous natural blue of indigo in this perfect-for-summer workshop. Students will learn a range of shibori dye resist processes in this hands-on, creative workshop, including tegumo (spiderweb), ori nui (stitched), and itajime (clamped) shibori methods. We will be using a natural indigo vat to dye a bamboo scarf and better understand the process and symbiotic relationship with indigo dye and this traditional textile surface design. Students will acquire the basic techniques to continue their journey into creating beautiful, unique textiles. This class is appropriate for ages 12+ years old. Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! April 13 & 14 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. both days In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: - Carving safety - Honing/sharpening - Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood - Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle - Carving out the handle - Sanding the spoon and handle Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. Ukraine's bookstores have expanded despite the war, fueled by interest in works by Ukrainian writers, some who have been killed by Russian forces. But a Russian missile struck a top printing plant.

Join in this weaving workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. Instructor Jeanine Ertl will provide guidance in a variety of Weaving Techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind woven textile. We’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into wall hangings. And, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you’ll have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. Come explore mindfully making in a space of creativity & harmony with others. In this class you will make a gorgeous, shaped belt bag perfect for your own adventures or gifting. The skills taught in this class include: how to sew darts; sewing a lined welt zip; bias binding; and bag hardware installation. Fabric options will be available, however, feel free to bring heavyweight scraps (denim, velvet, canvas) or vinyl. This bag is highly customizable. An alternative to the webbing strap could be repurposing an old belt, or from a bag you no longer use. Thrift stores are full of interesting belts and hardware to harvest from bags! This class is appropriate for a sewer with knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and sewing basics. A special opportunity for San Diego+Tijuana youth to express their unique point of view on the subject of PLACE, through digital works of photography, mixed media and illustration. On May 18, 2024, Outside the Lens will host “Voice Out,” a reception, panel discussion, and juried youth arts exhibition featuring photography, mixed media, and illustrations at the organization’s Wonder Lab in San Diego’s East Village. The exhibit will display works by young creatives from San Diego and Tijuana that express their unique perspective on “Place.” This year’s exhibition marks a first for Outside the Lens, and the inaugural theme of “Place” aims to create a welcoming space and place for young people, families, educators, creatives, and all community members interested in experiencing artworks that explore the concepts of belonging, connection, and self-expression. The show’s title, “Voice Out” refers to how empowering it can feel for young people to tell their own stories and how that empowerment can positively transform entire communities. Free registration for the event is available through the “Voice Out” website. There will also be paid tickets available for an exclusive preview and reception from 3-4 p.m. All entries will be displayed and celebrated and the evening will include a live DJ set, a panel discussion, and an awards ceremony. Youth, aged 8-12, and teens, aged 13-19, are encouraged to submit digital work through Outside the Lens’ “Voice Out” website from March 4 through April 7, 2024. A jury of youth, artists, and community leaders from the San DiegoTijuana region will select winning submissions to be featured on the night of the event. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three works in each category. Learn to cook your own nourishing broth! In this 1.5 hour workshop you will learn, from beginning to end, the best process to making many variations of French stocks. We will also discuss Asian approaches to making broths to better inform us and spawn creativity when we are deciding on the ideal broth for any recipe in the kitchen. Chef Charlie of Lineage Meals will demonstrate and discuss the process of making an organic bone broth from scratch. Students will engage in conversation regarding flavors, taste the broth, and take their own 32 oz jar home!
