“Smoke Signals” Film Screening and Dinner Nov. 20 | 5-7 p.m. | Intertribal Resource Center Join us for a special screening of the heartwarming coming-of-age film “Smoke Signals” (1998). A cult-classic in the Native American community, this film explores themes of identity, family and healing through the humorous and heartfelt journey of best friends Victor and Thomas. Dinner and beverages will be provided by the ITRC. The Intertribal Resource Center is located on the 1st floor of the Student Services Center in SSC Room #187. We are located at the corner of Rupertus Way and Myers Drive, south of Price Center East. Every November, UC San Diego recognizes and celebrates the achievements, cultures, and contributions of Native American people and tribes during Native American Heritage Month. We asked them to discover how inventing in tiny habits of creativity can enrich lives and lead to significant transformation. Explore the magic that occurred when ordinary moments were ignited with creative sparks and experience a gallery full of the resulting creations of the community. Throughout the year Front Porch Gallery worked with partners to implement meaningful, arts-based workshops to produce this exhibition. This interactive program served as a platform for every participant, regardless of their age or abilities, to create, share and connect through art. The results are spectacular! The exhibition "La Jolla Surf: Culture, Art, Craft" invites viewers into the world of surfing through iconic photography by Roy Porello, Jeff Divine, and Ron Church, original artwork by award winning designer John Van Hamersveld, and surf boards from the greatest shapers in the region. A central focus of the exhibition is original interview footage with local surfers created by Curator John Durant. Visitors will hear firsthand accounts of how the surfing community developed, how it has evolved over time, and the powerful connection to, and appreciation of the ocean and nature that surfing engenders.
