Union Hall Gallery Presents “Touchpoints with Artists: Darby Haily, Alex Parrasch, Andie Ryan Round, Emma Limtiaco, John Dewey, Sara Ajami, Sarah Stevenson February 7, 2025 - March 21, 2025 Opening Reception: Friday, February 7, 2025 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. During the opening reception, several of the artists will speak about their personal practice and the insights gained from creating collaborative work. The exhibition ’Touchpoints’, highlights the transformative potential of collaborative art making as explored through the student-led seminar "DISCO", created and facilitated by MFA candidate Darby Simmons at Claremont Graduate University. In this seminar, artists initiated individual artworks and passed them to fellow participants, with each piece evolving through the contributions of the group. The result is a dynamic collection of works embodying shared creative processes, innovation, and collective imagination. To complement these collaborative pieces, the exhibition will also feature one individual work from each artist, providing insight into their personal practices and sparking dialogue on the interplay between individual and collective creation. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series returns to Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego with a three part speaker series that provides an in-depth look at the art-science collaborations that gave rise to Birch Aquarium’s "Embodied Pacific: Oceans Unseen" exhibition beginning with Superradiance. Embodying Earth. by artists Memo Akten and Katie Peyton Hofstadter. Superradiance. Embodying Earth. is a multiscreen video and sound installation by artists Memo Akten and Katie Peyton Hofstader that serves as a centerpiece of Birch Aquarium’s "Embodied Pacific: Oceans Unseen" exhibition. Inspired by conversations between the artists and Scripps researchers, this work explores the complex interactions between land, ocean and atmosphere that shape our living planet by interweaving dance, poetry, music and generative imagery with artificial intelligence. Join us for a conversation with the artists as they describe how they use art to engage us in science, evoking a visceral and intimate connection to our living planet. Seating is limited and lectures often sell out, so advanced registration is strongly recommended. (2024) Sally Gearhart was a charismatic trailblazer who led the charge in the 1970s and '80s lesbian feminist movement, leaving an indelible mark on women’s rights and LGBTQ+ equality. A brilliant and magnetic superstar, she inspired thousands with her unapologetic activism and visionary leadership. Yet, by 2008, her pivotal contributions had been all but forgotten, her legacy notably absent from the Hollywood film Milk. How could history overlook Sally Gearhart? This is the story of a revolutionary figure who cannot be erased. SPECIAL GUEST: Ondine Rarey Ondine is a filmmaker, editor, and writer. Her documentary FOOLS AND HEROES was a Grimme-Preis nominee (the German equivalent of an Emmy), airing on ARTE in France as well as stateside on PBS. She has edited well over a dozen documentary features and shorts, including "Now en Español" (for PBS), "A Great Ride," "Who Will Write Our History" and, “Rebel Hearts” an official selection at Sundance 2021. She has also worked on multiple TV series, including KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS and ALIEN ENCOUNTERS.
