Friday, Saturday, Sunday, 9:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m. March 14, 15, and 16 (3 days, 9 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio Follow your imagination and the patterns in fabric scraps as you combine them with painted paper, cutouts, and paints. This is a chance to recycle many colorful leftovers into fantasy creations. Compositional forms will be explained with a focus on movement and repetition. During the first class meeting, Susan will demonstrate techniques for preparing paper and gluing items smoothly, and she will provide some fabric scraps for your use. She will be working on a mixed-media collage while in class. The following classes will be used to complete a larger work using still life or photographs as inspiration.   Materials: Fabric scraps, paper,* acrylic paints, 11” x 14” canvas (or larger), gesso, brushes, clear acrylic medium, copies of old photos, magazines for collage, scissors. Useful additions: Rags, scraps of foam-core, corrugated cardboard, mat board, colored pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, India ink, watercolors. *Paper for the base of the artwork needs to be at least 100 lb. Pick no smaller than 16” x 20”. San Diego’s community college district finds itself directly in Trump’s crosshairs: Its “pride centers” were the only items called out by name in the administration’s plan to slash more than $10 billion of federal spending on education.

Over the past decade, enrollment at San Diego County public schools has decline by about five percent. That means there are 27,000 fewer students in local schools. State officials are projecting rates of decline will only get worse, which will force educators to make some hard decisions.

Note: Though this class is offered as part of the "Certificate in Poetry", there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this final workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. - Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. - Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. - Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. - Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts.
