  • Hundreds of people will rally to support people living with ALS at the 2025 Walk To Defeat ALS San Diego on October 5 at the Mission Bay - De Anza Cove. Registration for the 2025 Walk to Defeat ALS is now open. Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS robs people of the ability to walk, talk and eventually breathe. Through an extensive network, the ALS Association is on the ground in all 50 states providing support for people living with ALS and their loved ones by ensuring they have access to critical care programs and services. Walk to Defeat ALS is the world’s largest signature event focused on supporting people living with ALS and their families. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the annual Walk to Defeat ALS. Through Walk to Defeat ALS fundraising efforts, the ALS Association has been able to dramatically accelerate the fight against ALS by funding the development of new ALS treatments, by discovering new ALS genes, by creating new global research collaborations, and by significantly expanding access to ALS care. Walk to Defeat ALS events are more than fundraisers - it's a movement that unites the community in support of those affected by ALS. Many who participate have a loved one battling ALS while others participate in memory of a loved one who has lost their fight.   • For over 30 years, the San Diego Bunnyfest has been the largest annual fundraiser for the San Diego House Rabbit Society (SDHRS). This event is an open-air festival. Activities include a silent auction, art social, mini educational lectures, games, children’s crafts and 50+ vendors selling bunny-themed merchandise & services. It takes a village to keep San Diego House Rabbit Society going and the operational cost per year to care for the rabbits can exceed $630,000 per year and all proceeds from Bunnyfest help to defray those costs. In this class, you will learn how to make delicious kombucha safely at home, including flavoring and carbonation. This workshop includes your own SCOBY and a take-home swing-top bottle of seasonal kombucha! Learn: We’ll explain fermentation and have a brief discussion about the benefits of making and eating fermenting foods, and the history and science of kombucha Demo: We’ll show you how easy it is to start making fermented foods yourself at home! We’ll demo the techniques for brewing kombucha and also flavoring & carbonating it! Taste: We’ll have a variety of various homemade kombucha flavors to sample Do it Yourself: Roll up your sleeves and make your very own bottle of kombucha with seasonal flavors *Traditionally brewed kombucha has trace amounts of alcohol, usually below 0.5% abv.   • Learn to Warp & Weave! Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (1 hour lunch) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a Rigid Heddle Loom and natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, Weaver & Dyer Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn how: a rigid heddle loom works; to plan a textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.); to warp a rigid heddle; to weave; to remove your handwoven; and to finish a textile. All materials to warp & weave a sample included for use. If you’re interested in learning to warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom, please email Instructor Jeanine Ertl advance. No experience necessary.
